Deuteronomy 22:28–29
"If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her... then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife."
What They Taught You
A protection law. In the ancient Near East, an unmarried woman who had been violated had no social or economic future. Marriage to the man was a provision for her security — it ensured she would be cared for. The law was protecting her, not punishing her.
The Hebrew word translated as "seizes" may mean "takes hold of" rather than assault. Some scholars argue this passage describes seduction, not rape. Historical context is essential.
What It Says
A man seizes a woman and lies with her. The word is tapas — to grab, to take by force. He pays her father fifty silver shekels. She becomes his wife. He may never divorce her.
The payment goes to her father. Not to her. The injured party is the man who owned her.
The woman is not consulted. Her consent is not mentioned. Her desire is not a category that exists in this transaction.
She is now married to the man who raped her. For life. Because the law protects her.
What the Gaslighting Does
It tells you a law that gives a rapist his victim as a permanent wife is actually a protection for the victim. It translates the word for forcible seizure as a neutral taking. It tells you to think about her economic options rather than her body.
It locates the harm in her lost marriageability — not in what was done to her.
The theological framework that insists this is mercy is the same framework that built every legal system where rape was a property crime against the father, not a violence crime against the woman. This is not ancient history. Marital rape was not illegal in all fifty U.S. states until 1993. The logic is continuous.
What It Built
The legal and theological precedent that rape is a property crime. The damaged goods are the woman. The injured party is her father.
Every culture that required a rape victim to marry her attacker — and there have been many, and some still do — drew on this logic. Some drew on this text directly.
The idea that a woman's security matters more than her freedom. That what happens to her body is a transaction between men. That God wrote those terms and called them fair.
